JOB SUMMARY
The Excavator Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of excavators and related heavy equipment to extract, load, and move rock, overburden, and aggregate material at the Edrine Rock Crusher Inc. quarry site. As a front-line, on-site leader, the Excavator Operator sets the standard for safe equipment handling and site discipline, working closely with the Plant Manager/Crushing Supervisor and the wider quarry crew to keep extraction and loading operations running smoothly. The role reports directly to the General Manager and requires strong technical skill, sound judgment, and a firm commitment to safety.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as an on-site leader by setting a strong example of safety, discipline, punctuality, and professionalism for other equipment operators and site personnel.
- Operate excavators safely and efficiently to extract rock and overburden, dig and grade material, and load trucks and hoppers at the quarry face and crushing plant.
- Conduct pre-shift and post-shift inspections of the excavator, including hydraulics, tracks, bucket/attachments, fluid levels, and safety systems, reporting any faults promptly.
- Read and interpret site plans, blast layouts, and supervisor instructions to extract and move material accurately and efficiently.
- Position and maneuver the excavator safely around blast zones, crushing equipment, trucks, and personnel, maintaining safe clearances at all times.
- Coordinate closely with truck drivers, the front-end loader operator, and the Plant Manager/Crushing Supervisor to maintain a steady, efficient flow of material to the crusher.
- Monitor ground conditions, slope stability, and potential hazards at the quarry face, and report unsafe conditions to the General Manager immediately.
- Perform minor operational maintenance and housekeeping on the excavator, and coordinate with maintenance staff for repairs or servicing as needed.
- Maintain accurate operating records, including hours of operation, fuel usage, output volumes, and any incident or near-miss reports.
- Comply with all company safety policies, site-specific procedures, and Liberian occupational health and safety regulations at all times.
- Support and mentor junior operators and site staff in safe equipment operation and quarry best practices.
- Carry out any other duties as reasonably assigned by the General Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Valid heavy equipment operator’s certification/license for excavators, in good standing.
- 2 – 5 years of proven experience operating excavators, preferably in quarrying, mining, construction, or earthmoving operations.
- Solid working knowledge of excavator controls, attachments, and safe digging/loading techniques.
- Basic literacy and numeracy sufficient to complete operating logs, output records, and incident reports.
- Demonstrated understanding of quarry safety procedures, ground hazards, and equipment pre-checks.
- Clean safety record with no history of serious equipment-related incidents or violations.
SKILLS & KEY ATTRIBUTES
- Strong leadership qualities and the ability to act responsibly as an on-site representative of the company.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and precision in operating heavy equipment in confined or hazardous areas.
- High level of reliability, punctuality, and personal accountability.
- Good communication skills for coordinating with supervisors, drivers, and quarry crew.
- Physical fitness and stamina to manage long hours and physically demanding quarry site conditions.
- Honesty and integrity in handling company equipment and reporting operational issues.
- Ability to remain calm and exercise good judgment in emergency or high-pressure situations.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Based on-site at the Edrine Rock Crusher Inc. quarry in Zarzone Town, District 1, Margibi County.
- Exposure to outdoor conditions, dust, noise, vibration, and heavy equipment typical of a quarry and crushing environment.
- May require early morning, evening, or occasional weekend work to meet production schedules.
- Adherence to all site safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
