Duties and Responsibilities / KPI’s
Mechanical Engineering Support
- Provide technical engineering support for all mechanical systems across Port MPQ equipment, including conveyors, stackers, reclaimers, ship loaders, and auxiliary infrastructure.
- Review and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and OEM manuals to ensure correct application in maintenance and operations.
- Support maintenance teams in resolving complex mechanical issues and improving execution quality.
- Ensure compliance with engineering standards, design specifications, and operational requirements.
Equipment Reliability & Performance Improvement
- Monitor equipment performance and analyze mechanical reliability data to identify trends and potential failure risks.
- Develop and implement strategies to improve equipment availability, reliability, and lifecycle performance.
- Identify recurring failure modes and implement engineering solutions to eliminate or reduce them.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at optimizing system performance and efficiency.
Root Cause Analysis & Problem Solving
- Lead or participate in root cause analysis (RCA) of major equipment failures and chronic issues.
- Utilize structured methodologies (e.g., RCA, FMEA) to identify root causes and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Document and communicate findings, recommendations, and lessons learned to relevant stakeholders.
- Ensure effective follow-up and closure of identified issues.
Maintenance Strategy & Planning Support
- Support development and optimization of preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.
- Define maintenance task lists, frequencies, and procedures aligned with equipment criticality.
- Review maintenance execution data to improve planning, scheduling, and execution efficiency.
- Collaborate with planners to optimize maintenance schedules and reduce downtime.
Asset Management & Lifecycle Optimization
- Support asset management initiatives to ensure long-term sustainability and performance of mechanical systems.
- Evaluate equipment condition and recommend repair, refurbishment, or replacement strategies.
- Participate in lifecycle costing and long-term maintenance planning.
- Ensure effective asset documentation and system history tracking.
Project & Modification Support
- Participate in engineering projects involving modification, upgrade, or installation of mechanical systems.
- Review designs, scope of work, and technical specifications to ensure feasibility and compliance.
- Support commissioning and handover of new or upgraded equipment.
- Ensure all modifications are properly documented and integrated into existing systems.
Vendor & Contractor Management
- Liaise with OEMs, vendors, and contractors for technical support, spare parts, and equipment servicing.
- Evaluate vendor proposals and technical solutions.
- Monitor contractor work to ensure compliance with technical and quality standards.
- Ensure all external service providers meet safety and operational requirements.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain and update mechanical engineering documentation including drawings, procedures, and equipment records.
- Ensure all engineering activities comply with company standards, legislative requirements, and industry best practices.
- Support audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
- Ensure accurate recording of maintenance and engineering data in the maintenance management system (e.g., SAP).
Health, Safety & Risk Management
- Ensure all engineering and maintenance activities comply with company HSE policies and procedures.
- Participate in hazard identification, risk assessments, and mitigation planning.
- Identify mechanical risks and implement engineering controls to eliminate or reduce hazards.
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure zero harm objectives are achieved.
Training & Technical Development
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to maintenance personnel and junior engineers.
- Support development of technical training materials and procedures.
- Facilitate knowledge transfer to ensure sustainable maintenance and operational capabilities.
- Promote continuous skills development within the maintenance and engineering teams.
Continuous Improvement & Operational Excellence
- Identify opportunities to improve maintenance processes, engineering practices, and equipment performance.
- Drive initiatives to reduce downtime, improve MTBF, and optimize MTTR.
- Support implementation of reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) and best practices.
- Capture lessons learned and implement improvements across port operations.

Qualifications / Experience / Knowledge
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
Experience
- Minimum 6–8 years’ experience in mechanical engineering within mining, port operations, or heavy industrial environments
- Experience with bulk material handling systems and rotating equipment
- Experience in reliability engineering and maintenance optimization preferred
Technical Knowledge
- Bulk material handling systems (conveyors, stackers, reclaimers)
- Rotating equipment (gearboxes, motors, bearings)
- Hydraulic and lubrication systems
- Maintenance strategies (preventive, predictive, reliability-centered maintenance)
- Root cause analysis and failure investigation

Working Conditions
- Site-based role located in Buchanan Port, Liberia
- Expatriate rotational assignment
- Exposure to heavy industrial and port operating environment
- May require extended working hours during breakdowns, shutdowns, or project execution
Health and Safety

- Participate in health, safety and environment training programs to understand potential hazards, safety procedures, and emergency protocols.
- Report any health, safety and environmental concerns, incidents, or near misses promptly to the designated supervisor or safety officer.

- Wear appropriate PPE as required for specific tasks or environments and ensure that it is maintained and used correctly.
- Be familiar with emergency response procedures, including evacuation routes, assembly points, and first aid protocols.
- Follow established safe work practices and procedures to prevent accidents, injuries, or illnesses.
- Operate machinery, tools, and equipment safely, following manufacturer's instructions and the AML safety guidelines.
- Maintain a clean and orderly workspace to reduce hazards and prevent accidents.
- Promote a culture of health and safety awareness among coworkers by encouraging safe behaviors and reporting unsafe conditions.
- Participate in health and safety committees or meetings as required, providing input and suggestions for improving workplace safety.
- Keep accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and training activities as required by company policy and regulations.
Environment
- Oversee and monitor the environmental performance of your department's functions, ensuring high levels of awareness and compliance with company environmental policies and relevant environmental laws.
- Regularly review environmental performance metrics and indicators to track progress, identify trends, and address areas for improvement.
- Ensure all environmental incidents are reported promptly and investigated thoroughly in line with company policies and legal requirements.
- Uphold a culture of environmental responsibility and compliance within the organization by setting clear expectations for incident reporting and response at all levels.
- Collaborate with the Environment team to identify opportunities for environmental improvement and develop strategic programs to enhance sustainability practices.
