Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities / KPI’s

1. Maintenance Execution & Planning

  • Lead the execution of all mechanical maintenance activities, including preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance across Port MPQ equipment such as conveyors, stackers, reclaimers, ship loaders, and auxiliary systems.
  • Develop, review, and implement maintenance plans, schedules, and work orders in alignment with operational requirements.
  • Ensure all maintenance tasks are completed efficiently, within schedule, and in accordance with OEM specifications and company standards.
  • Coordinate daily, weekly, and shutdown maintenance activities to minimize downtime and maximize equipment availability.
  • Monitor maintenance backlog and prioritize work based on risk, criticality, and operational impact.

2. Equipment Reliability & Performance Management

  • Ensure high reliability and availability of mechanical systems through proactive maintenance and monitoring.
  • Analyze equipment performance trends and identify potential failure risks.
  • Drive root cause analysis (RCA) for mechanical failures and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Oversee condition monitoring activities (vibration, temperature, lubrication) to support predictive maintenance strategies.
  • Continuously improve asset performance and lifecycle management practices.

3. Team Leadership & Supervision

  • Lead, supervise, and mentor mechanical technicians, artisans, and contractors.
  • Allocate tasks, manage workload distribution, and ensure effective team performance.
  • Promote skills development, knowledge transfer, and continuous capability building within the team.
  • Enforce discipline, accountability, and adherence to maintenance procedures and standards.
  • Foster a strong teamwork culture and effective communication within the maintenance team and across departments.

4. Shutdown & Major Maintenance Management

  • Plan and execute major equipment shutdowns, overhauls, and inspections.
  • Coordinate resources, materials, and contractors to ensure successful shutdown execution.
  • Ensure all shutdown activities are completed safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Review post-shutdown reports and identify improvement opportunities for future maintenance events.

5. Spare Parts & Resource Management

  • Ensure availability of critical spare parts, tools, and consumables to support maintenance activities.
  • Work closely with supply chain and warehouse teams to optimize inventory levels and reduce downtime risk.
  • Monitor usage of parts and materials to ensure cost control and efficiency.
  • Provide input into spare parts strategy and critical equipment stocking requirements.

6. Vendor & Contractor Coordination

  • Supervise and coordinate third-party contractors performing mechanical work on-site.
  • Ensure contractor compliance with safety, quality, and technical requirements.
  • Liaise with OEMs and vendors for technical support, troubleshooting, and equipment upgrades.
  • Review contractor deliverables, work quality, and performance against agreed standards.

7. Documentation & Compliance

  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date maintenance records, work orders, and equipment history in the maintenance management system (e.g., SAP).
  • Review and update maintenance procedures, work instructions, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure all activities comply with company policies, engineering standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to audits and inspections related to maintenance and asset management.

8. Health, Safety & Risk Management

  • Ensure all maintenance activities are conducted in full compliance with HSE standards and procedures.
  • Lead safety initiatives, toolbox talks, and hazard identification exercises.
  • Enforce strict adherence to permit-to-work systems, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and isolation procedures.
  • Identify and mitigate mechanical risks associated with equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Promote a strong safety culture with a focus on zero harm.

9. Continuous Improvement & Operational Excellence

  • Identify opportunities to improve maintenance efficiency, equipment reliability, and cost performance.
  • Implement best practices in maintenance planning, scheduling, and execution.
  • Drive initiatives to reduce downtime, improve MTBF, and optimize MTTR.
  • Capture lessons learned and implement improvements across maintenance processes.
  • Support reliability engineering programs and asset management strategies.

10. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Equipment availability and reliability (uptime)
  • Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)
  • Mean Time to Repair (MTTR)
  • Maintenance schedule compliance
  • Reduction in unplanned downtime
  • Safety performance (zero incidents)
  • Maintenance cost control and efficiency

Qualifications / Experience / Knowledge

1. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline

2. Experience

  • Minimum 8–10 years’ experience in mechanical maintenance within mining, port operations, or heavy industrial environments
  • At least 3–5 years in a supervisory or leadership role
  • Experience with bulk material handling equipment is essential

3. Technical Knowledge

  • Conveyor systems and bulk material handling equipment
  • Rotating equipment (gearboxes, motors, bearings)
  • Hydraulic and lubrication systems
  • Mechanical alignment and installation standards
  • Preventive and predictive maintenance techniques
  • Maintenance management systems (e.g., SAP)

Working Conditions

  • Site-based role located in Buchanan Port, Liberia
  • Expatriate rotational assignment

  • May require extended hours during shutdowns and critical maintenance periods

Health and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations, standards, and procedures.
  • Participate in health, safety and environment training programs to understand potential hazards, safety procedures, and emergency protocols.
  • Report any health, safety and environmental concerns, incidents, or near misses promptly to the designated supervisor or safety officer.
  • Assist in identifying workplace hazards and participate in risk assessments to minimize risks to personal health and safety.
  • Wear appropriate PPE as required for specific tasks or environments and ensure that it is maintained and used correctly.
  • Be familiar with emergency response procedures, including evacuation routes, assembly points, and first aid protocols.
  • Follow established safe work practices and procedures to prevent accidents, injuries, or illnesses.
  • Operate machinery, tools, and equipment safely, following manufacturer's instructions and the AML safety guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly workspace to reduce hazards and prevent accidents.
  • Promote a culture of health and safety awareness among coworkers by encouraging safe behaviors and reporting unsafe conditions.
  • Participate in health and safety committees or meetings as required, providing input and suggestions for improving workplace safety.
  • Keep accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and training activities as required by company policy and regulations.

Environment

  • Oversee and monitor the environmental performance of your department's functions, ensuring high levels of awareness and compliance with company environmental policies and relevant environmental laws.
  • Regularly review environmental performance metrics and indicators to track progress, identify trends, and address areas for improvement.
  • Ensure all environmental incidents are reported promptly and investigated thoroughly in line with company policies and legal requirements.
  • Uphold a culture of environmental responsibility and compliance within the organization by setting clear expectations for incident reporting and response at all levels.
  • Collaborate with the Environment team to identify opportunities for environmental improvement and develop strategic programs to enhance sustainability practices.
