Position Summary

The Operational Readiness Engineer – EC&I is accountable for leading the Electrical, Control and Instrumentation readiness and commissioning activities for Port MPQ equipment. The role ensures all EC&I systems are designed, installed, tested, and optimized to meet operational, safety, and performance standards prior to handover to operations.

Duties and Responsibilities / KPI’s

  • Commissioning & Operational Readiness
    • Lead and manage end-to-end EC&I commissioning activities for all Port MPQ systems, including conveyors, stackers, reclaimers, ship loaders, and auxiliary systems.
    • Develop, review, and execute detailed commissioning plans, checklists, test procedures, and system validation protocols.
    • Coordinate and oversee Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), loop checks, functional testing, and system integration testing.
    • Drive system readiness reviews by assessing installation completeness, documentation availability, and system integrity prior to energization and startup.
    • Ensure all EC&I systems meet operational performance criteria and are fully functional before handover.
  • Systems Integration & Performance Assurance
    • Ensure seamless integration between electrical systems, PLCs, SCADA platforms, drives, and instrumentation.
    • Validate control logic, interlocks, alarms, and automation sequences to ensure safe and efficient operation.
    • Monitor system performance during commissioning and initial operations to ensure reliability and stability.
    • Identify system inefficiencies and implement optimization measures to improve performance and energy efficiency.
  • Technical Review & Compliance
    • Review and validate engineering deliverables including control philosophies, IO lists, electrical schematics, cable schedules, and instrumentation diagrams.
    • Ensure all EC&I installations comply with company standards, OEM specifications, international codes, and regulatory requirements.
    • Verify proper installation, calibration, and configuration of instruments, control devices, and electrical systems.
    • Ensure compliance with electrical safety standards, isolation procedures, and permit-to-work systems.
  • Troubleshooting & Problem Resolution
    • Lead fault-finding and diagnostics of electrical, control, and instrumentation issues during commissioning and early operations.
    • Perform root cause analysis of system failures, identify corrective actions, and implement preventive measures.
    • Work closely with vendors, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams to resolve technical issues efficiently.
    • Maintain a defect tracking system to monitor, prioritize, and close commissioning punch list items.
  • Vendor & Stakeholder Coordination
    • Interface with OEMs, contractors, and engineering teams to ensure alignment on technical requirements and timelines.
    • Coordinate activities between mechanical, electrical, and operational teams to ensure integrated system readiness.
    • Participate in technical meetings, progress reviews, and readiness assessments with project stakeholders.
    • Ensure vendor deliverables, documentation, and support meet contractual and operational expectations.
  • Documentation & Handover
    • Ensure completeness and accuracy of all commissioning documentation including test reports, certificates, and as-built drawings.
    • Develop and maintain detailed records of commissioning activities, system performance, and defects.
    • Support preparation of handover documentation and ensure smooth transition to operations and maintenance teams.
    • Verify all EC&I systems are fully documented and aligned with operational requirements.
  • Training & Capability Development
    • Provide hands-on training and technical coaching to operations and maintenance teams on EC&I systems.
    • Develop training materials, operating procedures, and troubleshooting guidelines.
    • Support knowledge transfer initiatives to ensure long-term sustainability of system operations.
  • Health, Safety & Risk Management
    • Ensure all commissioning and operational readiness activities are conducted in full compliance with HSE standards.
    • Participate in risk assessments, hazard identification, and mitigation planning related to EC&I systems.
    • Enforce safe work practices including lockout/tagout (LOTO), electrical isolation, and permit-to-work processes.
    • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure zero harm during commissioning and startup phases.
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Identify opportunities to improve commissioning processes, system reliability, and operational efficiency.
    • Capture lessons learned and implement best practices for future projects and operations.
    • Contribute to the development of maintenance strategies and reliability programs.
  • Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
    • Commissioning milestones delivered on schedule and within scope
    • EC&I system availability and reliability post-handover
    • Number of defects at handover (target: zero critical defects)
    • Mean time to resolve system faults
    • Compliance with safety standards (zero incidents)

    Qualifications / Experience / Knowledge

    Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Control & Instrumentation, or related discipline
    Experience
    • Minimum 8–10 years’ experience in EC&I commissioning within mining, ports, or heavy industrial environments
    • Proven experience in large-scale equipment commissioning and system integration
    Technical Knowledge
    • PLC systems (Siemens, ABB, Rockwell)
    • SCADA systems and industrial communication networks
    • Motor control systems (LV/HV), drives, and switchgear
    • Instrumentation and process control

    • Follow established safe work practices and procedures to prevent accidents, injuries, or illnesses.
    • Operate machinery, tools, and equipment safely, following manufacturer's instructions and the AML safety guidelines.
    • Maintain a clean and orderly workspace to reduce hazards and prevent accidents.
    • Promote a culture of health and safety awareness among coworkers by encouraging safe behaviors and reporting unsafe conditions.
    • Participate in health and safety committees or meetings as required, providing input and suggestions for improving workplace safety.
    • Keep accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and training activities as required by company policy and regulations.

    • Oversee and monitor the environmental performance of your department's functions, ensuring high levels of awareness and compliance with company environmental policies and relevant environmental laws.
    • Regularly review environmental performance metrics and indicators to track progress, identify trends, and address areas for improvement.
    • Ensure all environmental incidents are reported promptly and investigated thoroughly in line with company policies and legal requirements.
    • Uphold a culture of environmental responsibility and compliance within the organization by setting clear expectations for incident reporting and response at all levels.
    • Collaborate with the Environment team to identify opportunities for environmental improvement and develop strategic programs to enhance sustainability practices.
