Position Summary
The Operational Technology (SCADA) Specialist is responsible for the management, maintenance, optimization, and reliability of SCADA and industrial automation systems supporting Port MPQ equipment. The role ensures seamless integration between control systems, operational processes, and data platforms, enabling safe, efficient, and reliable port operations.
Duties and Responsibilities / KPI’s
- SCADA & Automation System Management
- Maintain, monitor, and support SCADA systems controlling Port MPQ equipment including conveyors, stackers, reclaimers, ship loaders, and associated infrastructure.
- Ensure continuous availability, stability, and performance of SCADA platforms and automation systems.
- Configure and maintain SCADA servers, operator workstations, HMIs, and communication networks.
- Manage system alarms, trends, and data visualization tools to support operations and maintenance teams.
- Ensure proper system backups, redundancy, and disaster recovery mechanisms are in place and functioning.
- PLC & Control Systems Integration
- Support and maintain PLC systems (e.g., Siemens, ABB, Rockwell) integrated with SCADA platforms.
- Assist with control logic updates, modifications, and optimization to improve equipment performance.
- Ensure seamless communication between PLCs, field devices, and SCADA systems using industrial communication protocols (e.g., Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet/IP).
- Validate system interlocks, control sequences, and automation workflows to ensure safe operation.
- System Performance & Reliability Optimization
- Monitor system performance and identify issues impacting reliability, data accuracy, or operational efficiency.
- Analyze system logs, alarms, and performance data to detect anomalies and proactively address issues.
- Implement improvements to enhance automation efficiency and reduce system downtime.
- Support continuous system tuning and optimization to ensure consistent operation under varying load conditions.
- Troubleshooting & Incident Management
- Diagnose and resolve SCADA, PLC, and communication network faults in a timely and effective manner.
- Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for system failures and recurring issues.
- Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, and operations teams to resolve integrated system problems.
- Maintain incident logs and ensure proper documentation of issues and resolutions.
- Cybersecurity & System Integrity
- Ensure compliance with industrial cybersecurity standards and company IT/OT policies.
- Implement and maintain access controls, user permissions, and system security protocols.
- Monitor and protect systems against unauthorized access, cyber threats, and data breaches.
- Work closely with IT teams to manage network security, firewalls, and secure communication architecture.
- System Upgrades & Project Support
- Plan and implement SCADA system upgrades, patches, and enhancements.
- Participate in automation projects, including design review, installation, testing, and commissioning.
- Ensure all upgrades are properly tested and validated before deployment.
- Support integration of new equipment and systems into existing SCADA infrastructure.
- Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date SCADA system documentation including architecture diagrams, network configurations, and functional descriptions.
- Ensure all changes to systems are documented and controlled through change management processes.
- Support audits, inspections, and compliance checks related to OT systems.
- Ensure systems comply with company standards and regulatory requirements.
- Training & Knowledge Transfer
- Provide technical training to operators, technicians, and engineers on SCADA systems and automation tools.
- Develop user manuals, standard operating procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
- Support knowledge transfer to ensure long-term sustainability of systems and operational capability.
- Vendor & Stakeholder Coordination
- Interface with OEMs, system integrators, and vendors for technical support and system improvements.
- Coordinate with contractors performing automation and control system work.
- Participate in technical meetings, system reviews, and readiness assessments.
- Ensure vendor deliverables meet project and operational requirements.
- Health, Safety & Risk Management
- Ensure all automation and SCADA activities comply with company HSE policies and procedures.
- Participate in hazard identification and risk assessments related to control systems.
- Support safe system operation by ensuring proper alarm management and safety interlocks.
- Promote a strong safety culture with emphasis on safe control system operation.
- Continuous Improvement & Digital Optimization
- Identify opportunities to enhance digitalization, automation efficiency, and system integration.
- Support implementation of advanced monitoring, predictive analytics, and reporting tools.
- Drive improvements in data utilization for operational decision-making.
- Capture lessons learned and implement best practices for OT system management.

Qualifications / Experience / Knowledge
- Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or related discipline
- Experience
- Minimum 7–10 years’ experience in SCADA/automation systems within mining, ports, or heavy industrial environments
- Proven experience with industrial control systems and system integration
- Experience with large-scale material handling systems is highly desirable
- Technical Knowledge
- SCADA platforms (e.g., Siemens WinCC, ABB, Wonderware, Ignition)
- PLC programming and troubleshooting (Siemens, ABB, Rockwell)
- Industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Profibus, OPC, Ethernet/IP)
- Network infrastructure for OT systems

Working Conditions
